Dozens of tractors travelled from Wilmot Township to regional headquarters

A long line of tractors wound through Waterloo Region on Wednesday, as farmers and supporters launched a highly-visible protest against the Wilmot land assembly.

Dozens of tractors, large and small, gathered near the location along Bleams Road in Wilmot Township where the Region of Waterloo is trying to assemble 770 acres of land for an industrial site.

The land parcel is bounded by Highway 7/8, Nafziger Road, Bleams Road and Wilmot Centre Road.

Shortly before 4:30 p.m., the convoy hit the road with a police escort, travelling east on Highway 7/8 into Kitchener, along Ottawa Street and up Weber Street to Frederick Street and regional headquarters, arriving about 90 minutes later.

They joined a rally outside the building, where regional council was meeting on Wednesday evening.

Earlier this week, a rally was held prior to a Wilmot council meeting to send a message that the community is not a willing host for the industrial site.
